How to Shave Like Dad

The most beautiful part about parenthood is all of the moments we get as mothers and fathers to bond with our children.

Those bonding moments are especially sacred and meaningful in the case of mothers and daughters and fathers and sons. There are simply life experiences that I am not able to share with my boys because I have never had the opportunity to experience them myself. Sure, I get to claim a lot of the emotional and physical support for both of my boys, 10 & 18, but there are certain rites of passage as boys and as they journey into manhood that will be reserved for them with their father.

How to Shave Like Dad

One of the most iconic bonding moments between a father and son that we all know from TV, movies and, well, life, is learning to shave your facial hair. It’s a big moment for any young man as they begin to blossom into the men they are destined to become. And whether they’re shaving a few whiskers, or in the case of my boys’ genetics, so much hair, it’s a skill that is best passed down from the man who helped gift them with all of that hair.

I remember when my oldest son, Christian, learned to shave for the first time. As a mother, it was emotional and incredible to see him so grown in one moment and then right back to that adorable baby-faced boy I will always remember him as.

My youngest son, Charlie, isn’t quite old enough to have to worry about shaving a little manly stubble, but I know that day is right on the horizon for him. What I love most about him having an older brother is that the legacy of “The First Shave” can be passed down from a fatherly bond to a brotherly bond. It’s really pretty magical when I stop to think about it.
